Make space for the question

An average result and a prediction for a particular case require different kinds of checking. A method could describe a group average closely while making poor predictions for individual records within that group. To assess a prediction, imagine setting aside observations before building the method, then comparing its forecasts with those untouched records. That exercise asks whether the method can handle cases it did not help summarize. Reading a group result alongside a prediction claim is therefore an invitation to look for a separate check, rather than assuming that a well described average supplies one.

Keep these questions nearby

  1. Is the report describing observed group results or forecasting individual records?
  2. What separate check shows how predictions perform on observations withheld during development?
  3. Could accurate group summaries coexist with large errors in individual predictions?
