Make space for the question
Turning a score into a label makes a result easier to summarize, but it can hide how close someone was to the dividing line. Hypothetical scores just above and just below a cutoff might receive different labels despite being nearby on the original scale. Meanwhile, people carrying the same label could have quite different scores. Reading both versions helps preserve that detail. The label describes a rule for grouping observations; the underlying scale shows distances that the rule leaves out. A useful interpretation should explain why that grouping serves the question rather than treating the boundary as self explanatory.
Keep these questions nearby
- How were the dividing line and the resulting category labels chosen?
- What differences become invisible when the original scores are replaced by labels?
- Would observations near the cutoff receive very different descriptions despite similar scores?
