Make space for the question

An explanation becomes more useful when it points to an observation that could challenge it. A story that can accommodate every possible result leaves little room for a meaningful test. To examine a proposed explanation, imagine describing in advance what would be expected if it were correct, then what a plausible alternative would predict. If both predict the same observation, obtaining that observation would not distinguish them. The next useful question is what different measurement or arrangement could separate their expectations. This approach gives an appealing account something more demanding to do than merely sound coherent.

Keep these questions nearby

  1. What observation would be difficult to explain if the proposed account were correct?
  2. Does a plausible alternative predict the same result from this particular test?
  3. Which different measurement could help distinguish the competing explanations more clearly?
